South Buffalo Charter School

The Spanish curriculum at South Buffalo Charter School is aligned with New York State standards. It is delivered using a variety of text and technology resources. The goal of the program in grades K-6 is to build a basic foundation in the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, while also introducing students to the culture, history and geography of the Spanish-speaking world. In 7th and 8th grade, the students continue to expand their knowledge in the four key areas and cultural aspects in preparation for the New York State Spanish Proficiency exam at the conclusion of 8th grade. 

Some of the standards for each level are:  

 LISTENING & SPEAKING ~ Comprehend language consisting of simple vocabulary and structures in face-to-face conversation with peers and familiar adults.

 LISTENING & SPEAKING ~ Call upon repetition, rephrasing, and nonverbal cues to derive or convey meaning from a language other than English

 READING & WRITING ~ Understand the main idea and some details of simple informative materials written for native speaker

READING & WRITING ~ Compose short, informal notes and messages to exchange information with members of the target culture

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION ~ Use some key cultural traits of the societies in which the target language is spoken
