Welcome to 2nd grade
Welcome to Second Grade!
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I have spent the last few days getting to know each of my students and I am truly excited to have the opportunity to be your child’s second grade teacher. This is the year that your child becomes more independent and responsible for their own learning & work habits. As the year progresses, students will develop and improve their skills & strategies to grow into an independent, self-directed learner. As a teacher, it is very rewarding to be a part of this important transitional year. I’m looking forward to working with you and your child to help them reach and utilize their maximum potential to ultimately accomplish their goals with confidence and success.
Take Home Folder
One of the most important things your child will bring home every day is their blue “Take Home Folder”. Please take the time each evening with your child to look through the folder. Throughout the first few weeks the folders may be light with information but will be used as a way to communicate when needed. As the year progresses, your child will be bringing home classwork, quizzes, and tests so please make sure to clean out the “keep at home” side of the folder with your child on a regular basis. Any papers that need to come back to school should remain on the “return to school” side of the folder.
Homework is an integral part of the learning process for all students. It serves as a reinforcement of the lessons taught that day, or a review of relevant concepts. Homework practice helps students strengthen their skills & knowledge. Math Homework will be given Monday – Thursday, unless otherwise specified. Spelling words will also go home on Monday. Please study and practice these words during the week in order to prepare for the test on Friday. There will be no homework over the weekend unless classwork in not completed and your child is falling behind. However, please encourage your child to continue to read over the weekend.
In the primary grades, birthdays are an exciting and special time for students! Everybody will have an opportunity to celebrate their birthday in school. Please feel free to send in a birthday treat when that important day comes for your child. This year we have 23 students in our class and I would suggest cupcakes, brownies, cookies, or pre-wrapped treats. They seem to be the most manageable for students. Please save extra birthday celebrations (goody bags, candles, cake) for outside of school.
This year, students will have gym every other day. You may send in sneakers for your child to keep in their cubby if you would like to. We will rotate specials by quarter. For our homeroom, we will be on the following schedule:
Quarter 1- Music
Quarter 2- Art
Quarter 3- Library
Quarter 4- Spanish
As I previously mentioned your child’s take home folder will allow us to stay connected as much as possible. However, you can always contact me through my school e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. I routinely check my e-mail throughout the day which often leads to a quick response. Additionally, you can always send in a note with your child and/or call the school directly at 826-7213 (ext. 174). Please keep in mind if you’re calling during school hours, it will usually go directly to voicemail and I may not be able to retrieve the message until after school hours.
Students will have time in their schedule for a mid-morning snack. We encourage students to bring in healthy snacks to help them grow and stay healthy. Some suggestions include: fruits, vegetables, goldfish, pretzels, crackers, or string cheese.
Students are required to wear our school uniform every day unless otherwise noted as a "dress down" day on the school calendar. The students should be in a navy SBCS polo shirt and are able to wear pants, a khaki uniform skirt or or khaki uniform dress. Uniform shorts are allowed from August to October and from April to June. As part of our school uniform, students should be in brown, navy or black dress shoes. Students are given time to change into their sneakers before gym but should not be worn on a daily basis.
In our classroom, we will be using a colored behavior chart. Each day students will start on green (ready to learn) and will move their clip up and down based on their behavior. At the end of each day, students will color in whatever color they ended their day on their monthly behavior calendar. This calendar should stay in their take home folder and brought back each day. Please initial inside each day to let me know that you are aware of your child’s behavior for the day.
Thank you in advance for all your help and support. This is going to be a great year filled with many exciting and new challenges. Please feel free to contact me at any time!
